Americanah Poster & Booklet

Poster & Book Design

These booklets fold out in to posters on the other side, and contain excerpts from blog posts in Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The book tackles race and identity which are themes included throughout the design.

From afar the posters look like they say the same thing right side up and upside down. However, one of them says “African American” and the other says “American African” conveying how two things that may look the same are drastically different if you look closer.

Each booklet features different abstract shapes that progressively illustrate breaking free and coming to terms with identity. The first book has bars, the second shows the edge of a box to show a way out, and the third has a rounded box getting smaller as if escaping.

Text in each booklet is intentionally placed to feel uncomfortable as the subject itself is uncomfortable. Lastly, the third book has content discussing a solution and has much less text than the other to provide a place of reflection and illustrate that there is no true solution.
